Uva is a major tea-growing region and is famed for its fragrant, high grown tea large plantations cover over 40,000 hectares. The higher elevations of Uva – Haputale, Bandarawela, Diyathalawa and Welimada are among Sri Lanka 's top health resorts due to their cool, mild climate where temperatures average between 12-21 C and their scenic locations. The province rich farmlands, fields, orchards, Gardens Rivers and lakes yield an abundance of fresh fruit, vegetables, fresh water fish, dairy and other produce to delight visitors. The province also grows and processes large quantities of cane sugar, notably around Pelwatta, in lower Uva Rich gem deposits especially blue sapphires and garnets occur in the down land areas of Lunugala and Okkampitiya.

Good tourist accommodation is available in the province. The provincial capital Baudulla is about 230 km from Colombo by road (via Bandarawela, Balangoda, Rathnapura and Avissawella) and is also an important road junction. With main highways to the southern and estern coasts and to the hill capital, kandy and other provincial centers. Budulla is also the terminus of the Sri Lanka Railways Main Line a spectacular 240 km cross-country mountain rail-road. The friendly people of Uva who are of diverse ethnic origins, share a common tradition of hospitality to visitors and will make a stay in the province an enjoyable and enriching experience.

Maligavila & Dambegoda

The colossal standing Buddha at Maligavila near Okkampitiya towers 34 feet. And is 10 feet in width. Dating from around the 7 th century AD. The Maligavila image, carved from crystalline limestone is part of an ancient complex of terraces, gateways and a pillared council chamber, surrounded by jungle. In close proximity at Dambegoda is another striking colossus, 25 feet in height, of Avalokiteswara, a future Buddha.

Buduruwagala

One of the Uva's most striking and dramatic monument, Buduruwala is a group of seven (7) colossal standing rock-cut Mahayana Buddhist figures, located at Nugayaya on a turn off on the Tanamallwila - Wellawaya highway. Carved in high relief on a cliff face in thick jungle, the central Buddha figure of 51ft is flanked by Bodhisatva (Future Buddha) figures and the Goddess Tara. The figure show traces of original plaster and paint and dated between 8 th to 10 th centuries A.D.
